The Geary BRT Plan

Brazil BRTBus Rapid Transit is a proven, effective system that promises to get Geary Boulevard going. Here are just some of the many reasons to support BRT:
  • BRT is affordable. Building the Geary BRT system will cost a fraction of what building a full rail system would cost, but will provide many of the same benefits. Much of the costs will be offset by regional, state, and Federal funds. What’s more, the operating costs of the BRT system will be lower than the costs of other lines, because the Geary BRT line will be able to move more passengers, faster, using fewer buses and drivers.

  • BRT is fast and reliable. Because Geary BRT buses won’t be slowed down by traffic on Geary Boulevard, service will be far faster down this busy corridor. It will be much easier for buses to stick to their schedule, too, because they won’t be slowed by sporadic traffic jams. To make service even faster and more France BRTreliable, BRT buses will have transit signal priority that reduces the amount of time they spend at red lights; passengers will be able to board through all doors and buy their tickets from machines instead of from the driver. And it’s not only buses running exclusively down Geary that will benefit from the BRT infrastructure: all buses that use even part of the Geary corridor will be able to use these dedicated transit lanes.

  • BRT can be easily converted to rail. Geary BRT is designed to be "rail-ready." This means that, should the city decide at some later date to convert the BRT system to light rail, the switch will be faster and less expensive than it would be to build out a rail system from scratch.

  • BRT works. Bus Rapid Transit has succeeded around the country, in cities like Boston and Los Angeles, and around the world, with BRT systems moving millions every year on every continent except Antarctica.
